Phillip Dornbusch

Phillip (...) is not “only” a highly talented saxophone player and bandleader, he’s also a composer with interesting concepts. His current band PROJEKTOR has already received a lot of attention.

Phillip Dornbusch (born 1994) is a saxophonist and composer based in New York. He began playing the piano at the age of four and discovered his passion for the saxophone at twelve. After finishing school, taking his first saxophone lessons, and winning several prizes at Jugend Musiziert, he decided to pursue music studies at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. However, finding Hanover too limiting, the native of Stadthagen transferred in 2015 to the prestigious Jazz Institute Berlin, where he continued his studies with Peter Weniger and Greg Cohen.

Following a study abroad period in The Hague and mentorship under John Ruocco at the Royal Conservatory, Phillip joined the Jazz Orchestra of the Federal Republic of Germany (BuJazzO) from 2018 to 2020, performing under the direction of Jiggs Whigham and Niels Klein. In 2018, he also won the Hanover and Munich Jazz Prizes with the Fynn Großmann Quintet and, as a member of the BujazzO, was among the recipients of the Frankfurt Music Prize.

Upon completing his bachelor's degree at the Jazz Institute Berlin, Phillip founded his band, Phillip Dornbuschs Projektor, which released its debut album, "REFLEX", in early 2021. The band's second album, "Re|construct", followed in 2023 and was nominated for Album of the Year at the German Jazz Prize. A recipient of the Concerto21 Academy scholarship, Phillip is also supported by the DAAD for his master's studies at the City College of New York.

He has performed at numerous festivals and toured extensively across Europe and beyond, with notable appearances at the Elbjazz Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival (USA), and Toronto Jazz Festival (CAN). He has also shared the stage with renowned artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Cheek, Wanja Slavin, Lucia Cadotsch, Uli Kempendorff, Kit Downes, and Randy Brecker.
